How to Store Vintage Clothing and Retro Media

Clothing and media survive decades of neglect just fine, right up until someone stores them badly for one summer. Storage is where most preventable damage actually happens.

Cool, dry, and dark beats everything else. Direct sunlight fades dye and weakens fibers over time, even through a window. Attics and basements are both bad long term storage, they swing in temperature and humidity more than a closet does, and that swing is what actually breaks materials down.

Skip mothballs. The smell embeds into fabric permanently and is genuinely difficult to fully remove. Cedar blocks or cedar rings do the same job of deterring moths without leaving a scent that outlives the moths themselves.

Hang structured pieces, jackets, blazers, button-ups, so they keep their shape. Fold knits and heavier sweaters instead, hanging stretches them out at the shoulders permanently.

VHS tapes, vinyl, and trading cards should be stored upright, never flat and stacked. Weight distorts tape reels and warps vinyl over time, even sitting still.

Whatever you're storing long term, check on it seasonally. Small problems, a moth hole, a card sleeve starting to yellow, are cheap to catch early and expensive to catch late.
